Updates from PMIWDC’s Programs Operational Area

A featured board article by John White, VP Programs

Welcome to PMIWDC 2017!

As we start the 2017 New Year here at PMIWDC, we are very excited to hold our monthly chapter events at a new location, on a new day, and even with a new format!

John White, VP Programs

Our new location for our monthly chapter events will now be held at the Le Meridien Arlington Hotel in Arlington, VA. Moving to this new location gives our members easier access to the Metro (which is only one block away), and easier access to parking (parking garage is next door and connected to the hotel and only $5.00 after 5pm).

Our new day for our monthly chapter events is now the 3rd Thursday of the month, occurring on the 1st and 3rd month of each quarter (except for December 2017 which will be the 2nd Thursday of the month). Moving to this new day and schedule gives members extra opportunities to attend PMIWDC events.

Our new format for our monthly chapter events is focused on offering attendees ready to use PM knowledge and skills through hard and soft skill presentations, as well as professional networking. While our past large dinner meetings were very popular, they did not offer the flexibility to create sustainable knowledge and skills development. The new flexible format offers the ability for more engagement and responsiveness to the desires of our member customers. Attendees will continue to have the opportunities to learn, connect, network, and earn PDUs starting at 5:30 pm until 8:00pm. While a sit-down dinner is no longer offered, our new format does include appetizers.

Our other PMIWDC Operational Areas will also be involved. Our Marketing Operational Area will offer our PMIWDC Market Place (a great place to pick up current project management publications and other great project, program, and portfolio management items); our Membership Operational Area will be available to welcome new members (introducing them to our membership, establishing new relationships and making new friends); and our Book Club team will be on-site to talk about the latest and greatest books on project management (and to offer suggestions for upcoming PM publications).

Our Programs Networking team will available to let members know about our upcoming PMIWDC networking events, like PM After Hours (our evening professional networking event held six times per year in Washington DC and in Virginia), and they will also identify those who are offering PM job opportunities and those who are looking for PM job opportunities at our monthly chapter events.

Teaming up with our Educational Partnership Operational Area, our new format also focuses on Universities and encouraging college students to be involved with their local PMI chapter, the project management community, and project management as a profession. Our University PM Talks will be held at local universities and will include speakers pushing into PMI’s Talent Triangle of Technical, Leadership, Strategic and Business topics for speaker presentations. These University PM Talks will usually be held on the 2nd month of the quarter and will offer Networking and Pizza from 5:00pm to 6:00pm, with the speaker presentations being held from 6:00pm to 7:00pm. PMIWDC members are also encouraged to attend and network at this event!

Programs will continue to offer PM in the AM, which is our breakfast PM speaker event (for members who can’t attend our evening events); our PM Saturday event, which is our Saturday PM speaker event (for our members who can’t attend our weekday events), and our digital events, like our Webinar events, which is our virtual PM speaker event and our PM Tools event, which is simulcast each time they meet. Our Programs Networking team will continue to hold PM After Hours networking events this year (held in Washington DC and Virginia), along with other professional networking events in between.

Programs offer our PMIWDC members a wide range of opportunities to learn and use PM knowledge and skills, along with professional networking, and many ways to obtain PDU’s for your professional development.
