About the Seminar

Projects are prime opportunities for innovation. However, many projects and managers avoid opportunities for innovation, opting instead to minimize risks by relying on established techniques and technologies, transferring risks to contractors, and rigidly sticking to plan. In this interactive workshop, we’ll examine the value of proactively incorporating innovation in both project processes and products, and the characteristics of managers who excel at innovating.

We use historical case studies in innovation, such as the Transcontinental Railroad, Ironbridge, and Stockton Darlington Railway, to extract important lessons in innovation that can be applied to project management in the modern world. In the process, we’ll define innovation, review its variations, and discuss methods for fostering it on projects. Attendees will put their learning to practice via interactive exercises and cases that will help further draw out techniques and insights.

Entertaining and full of intriguing historical details the workshop seeks to illuminate how innovation can work on projects. By the end of the workshop, you will have a set of best practices to:

  • Encourage and foster innovation on your projects,
  • Provide space for experimentation for problem solving, and
  • Use innovation to decrease project costs, increase project opportunities, and improve project returns.

    About the Speakers

    Mark Kozak-Holland, PhD, PMP, IPMA-D, Cert.APM


    Titanic Lessons for business is from the “Lessons from History” series. As the author behind the series, Mark Kozak-Holland brings years of experience as a consultant who helps Fortune-500 companies formulate projects that leverage emerging technologies. Since 1985 he has been straddling the business and IT worlds making these projects happen. He is a PMP, certified business consultant, the author of several books, and a noted speaker.

    Mark has always been interested in tracing the evolution of technology and the 3 industrial revolutions of the last 300 years. Whilst recovering a failed Financial Services project he first used the Titanic analogy to explain to project executives why the project had failed. The project recovery was going to take 2 years and $8m cost versus the original $2m cost and 1 year duration. As a historian, Mark seeks out the wisdom of the past to help others avoid repeating mistakes and to capture time-proven techniques. His lectures on the Titanic project have been very popular at gatherings of project managers and CIOs.
