About the Dinner

Help us celebrate our one-year anniversary on Tuesday, June 28, from 5:30 until 8 PM at the Timberwood Grill on Rt. 29 North in Charlottesville. Ted Miller, from the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO), will provide a Program presentation about the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), which is located in Chile.

As a thank you for your support we will offer attendance for only $10 dollars. Instead of having a buffet, everyone will order from the menu below when they arrive. In order to serve in a timely and accurate manner, we ask that no substitutions be made. We will have a sign-in sheet where you will put your name and then check the dinner that you would like. In addition to the meal, you are also responsible for your own alcoholic beverage.

You are welcome to pre-register or you can just show up. Members of both PMIWDC or PMICVC are welcome - we want you to come and enjoy the fellowship of being with like minded Project & Program Managers!

About the Presentation

A $1.2 Billion dollar project that was initiated in 1995, ALMA is scheduled for completion in 2012.

The Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) is an international partnership between Europe, North America, East Asia and the Republic of Chile to build the largest astronomical project in existence. It is an astronomical interferometer, comprising an array of 66 12-meter and 7-meter diameter radio telescopes observing at millimeter and submillimeter wavelengths. It is being built on the Chajnantor plateau at 5000 meters altitude in the Atacama desert of northern Chile. ALMA is expected to provide insight on star birth during the early universe and detailed imaging of local star and planet formation. Costing more than a billion dollars, it is the most ambitious ground-based telescope currently under construction. ALMA will begin scientific observations in the second half of 2011 and is scheduled to be fully operational by the end of 2012.

As you can imagine, the magnitude, diversity, risks, challenges & coordination associated with this program are tremendous.  It should be a fascinating presentation.
