PMIWDC#01 Toastmasters Club

This is the first Toastmasters club in the world able to provide Professional Development Units (PDUs) for Project Management Professionals (PMPs). PMIWDC#01 Toastmasters was founded by a group of PMPs who were members of PMI Washington, DC as a means to improve their speaking and leadership skills, and named the club to reflect this relationship.

PMIWDC#01 Toastmasters recognizes the value of a non-threatening environment to foster self-development efforts. The level of camaraderie is high and the atmosphere is cooperative and supportive. Meetings consist of three main activities:
  • SPEECHES: At each meeting, selected members deliver prepared speeches.
  • TABLE TOPICS: Table Topics provide opportunities to practice impromptu speaking skills, critically important for both professional and personal interactions.
  • EVALUATION: Each speaker receives immediate feedback in the form of written as well as oral evaluations by a fellow club member. Evaluations are constructive and helpful, and are based on specific guidelines provided in the manual for each speech.

Other important roles in each meeting include Toastmaster of the Day (TMOD), General Evaluator, Topic Master, Timer, Ah Counter, Grammarian and Joke Master. Members take turns practicing their listening and leadership skills when they fill these essential roles.
