Strategic Partner - Women in Technology (WIT)

Women in Technology is currently seeking a Project Manager for the Bunyan Book Project

Project Background:

Women in Technology (WIT) has identified the "Bunyan Book" as an initiative for this year. The Bunyan Book is a project that started to take shape the night of the WIT Leadership Awards Banquet in May 2008. As she shared the stories of our Leadership Award Winners, Maureen Bunyan, the event's MC, became increasingly inspired and interested in the women being honored. She made a comment, "There are so many wonderful stories here — you should write a book. And I'll write the forward." Well, the organization took her comment seriously and decided to explore this possibility.

This coming May marks WIT's 10th Leadership Awards ceremony and the 15th anniversary of WIT — so the timing couldn't be better. The idea is to interview and profile every winner of the past WIT Leadership Awards, from 1999 to 2009. We believe such a book would offer tremendous benefits to WIT:

  • Raise awareness for WIT and elevate the WIT brand

  • Inspire other women and girls with these stories of leadership

  • Continue to honor the women WIT has recognized over the years with the WIT Leadership Awards

  • Potentially, generate some revenue

Based on preliminary research, we don't believe a similar book exists. Many leadership books offer a "how to" or prescribed way to become a leader. This book would present a variety of approaches as told by the women for whom these methods have worked and should appeal to a broad audience.

The upside of this book is tremendous, but we cannot underestimate the challenge ahead of us in bringing this book to market.

Project Manager Position Description:

The 'WIT / Bunyan Book' Project Manager will oversee all aspects of the Leadership Book project with respect to schedules and goals. The PM will develop and manage the project plan and work closely with the project steering committee and the sub-team leads to ensure deadlines, critical path milestones, and financial objectives, are achieved. The PM also provides pertinent information and communications to all parties to ensure timely execution of all phases of the integrated project.

Specifically, the PM will implement best practice project management processes to:

  • Define detailed project plans and timelines

  • Track and report the status, progress, and changes on all project tasks and deliverables

  • Coordinate information flow between all sub-teams

  • Identify project risks and develop mitigation plans

This is a volunteer opportunity to support an exciting initiative with the premier organization contributing to the success of professional women in the technology community.
