PMIWDC Wins 6 Awards from PMI

We were recently notified by PMI’s Global Operations Center that we have been named the winner of six major awards in 2008, including the Component of the Year (Recognition of Excellence), Volunteer of the Year (Shirley Buchanan) and Leader of the Year (Ron Taylor).

These awards are PMI’s way of celebrating chapters, programs and individuals who have demonstrated superior performance, and we are grateful to all those who have made this possible.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our volunteers, and to express my appreciation to Jay Demas, our VP Records Management, who was responsible for managing the collection, assembly and submission of our award application package, and Linda Cantey, our President-Elect, who provided excellent overall guidance for many of the award-winning initiatives.

For more information, please visit www.pmiwdc.org/news

Sincerely,
Ron W. Taylor, PMP

NOVA Advanced PM Training Seminar

The Northern Virginia Community College is sponsoring an Advanced Project Management Training Seminar in Risk Management on September 29 and 30, 2008 at their Reston, Virginia campus.

In this two-day course, you will learn about planning and implementing a Risk Management program in your workplace using real world case studies and examples.

Topics include: creating a Risk Management Plan, determining risk sources, anticipating unknown events, analysis categories and responses, examining irrational components of decision-making, tailoring risk response strategy to analysis factors, and avoiding groupthink.

At the end of the course, students will be armed with tools they need to implement or improve risk management activities in their own organizations.

They will also have the insight they need to do this within the context of individual, group and their own personal attitudes and biases, which can affect or cause conflict with analyses and decisions about risk management strategies and outcomes.

Cost to PMIWDC members is $545.00.
Participants will earn 14 PDU’s for this event.

PMO Accord Available through PMO SIG

PMI's Program Management Office (PMO) Specific Interest Group (SIG) recently published the first edition of a PMO Accord, accessible via the Resources tab of the PMOSIG's website at www.pmosig.org (you must be a member of the SIG to access it).

The PMOSIG Board chartered the project in December of 2007 with the goal of authoring "an Accord of proven practices for building and operating a Program Management Office (PMO)."  Over 140 PMOSIG members volunteered and contributed a collection of articles based on their experiences.  The Accord is a sharing of ideas and experiences from those who have been there.  Some of the ideas are complimentary, some are contradictory.  The team acknowledges that there is not a single solution for every situation; this is not an attempt to create a standard.  These are simply "proven" practices; ones that have worked for the contributors and may work for others.

The Accord will be an ongoing project within the PMOSIG...if you would like to view the Accord and/or participate in the next edition, you can join the PMOSIG via www.pmi.org and check it out at www.pmosig.org.
