A Note From the President

I hope you are enjoying another toasty Washington DC summer.  One of our classic summer events is the annual offering of PMI’s Seminars World, scheduled for August 11-14 the M Street Hotel.  The 2008 edition features small classes, experienced instructors and a great learning environment.  In addition to providing the opportunity to increase your knowledge of project management, it allows PMPs the chance to earn 14 PDUs for the 2-day seminars and 28 PDUs for the 4-day seminars.  For more information, please check www.pmi,org

Nominations are now open for selected positions on the 2009-2010 PMIWDC Board of Directors.  We are currently accepting nominations for President and President-Elect, along with several Vice President and Director at Large positions.  If you are interested in running for a position on the Board and would like to learn more about the nomination requirements, please visit www.pmiwdc.org/nominations

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Axiom Resource Management for supporting our Skyline luncheon series for the past five years.  The Skyline luncheon series was the first of these outreach efforts designed to better serve both our members and the greater project management community.  Since 2003 we have expanded our efforts to include a breakfast series in DC, a joint PMIWDC/PMI Baltimore dinner meeting series in Frederick, Maryland, a joint PMIWDC/PMI Central Virginia luncheon and dinner series in Quantico, VA and thirteen other luncheon series in the Washington DC metropolitan area.

Finally, please consider joining us for dinner on August 19 in Tysons Corner.  Our speaker, Marybeth Wootton, will discuss “Real World Implementation of PM Best Practices.” Ms. Wootton is Vice President, Performance Excellence, for the BAE Systems Customer Solutions operating group, and a much sought-after speaker.  It will be a great way to end the summer.

Ron Taylor, PMP

Call For International Travelers

PMIWDC is now accepting applications to travel to international destinations as part of our Chapter-To-Chapter program.  Great opportunities are available for members interested in helping to expand the scope of project management knowledge not only for themselves but for our chapter as well.  Trips are planned for Brazil, Uruguay, Russia, India, Australia, Greece, and Singapore.  All trips will occur in the Fall 2008 and Winter of 2009 timeframe on dates yet to be determined.  Travel expenses will be paid by PMIWDC.

Each of the individual evaluation categories below will be scored on a scale from 0 to 100.  Each of the categories have a relative weight, with all six summing to 100.  Applicants should indicate which country they are interested in, or indicate “any.”  The application should consist of three parts: 1) a written proposal of between 500 and 1,000 words setting forth why the applicant is the best candidate for representing the PMIWDC chapter at one of our partner chapters, and addressing each of the first five evaluation categories provided below; 2) an outline/summary of the intended presentation, and any associated written material; and 3) a resume.

b)      Knowledge of PMIWDC
c)       Topic Meaningful to Project Management
d)      Sponsorship/matching funds

The call for applications closes September 22, 2008.  Qualified applicants who can offer financial sponsorship to offset the travel expenses will be given preference.  Information about the Chapter-To-Chapter program may be found at www.pmiwdc.org/C2C

Applications should be submitted to Chris Karanski at chris.karanski@pmiwdc.org.
