About the Course
The Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) cites Organizational Process Assets as inputs to 80% of the processes in the standard, and updates to process assets as outputs of 30% of the processes. They are clearly critical to our projects’ success, but it is not always easy to obtain and use them, and each unique project will likely have needs that cannot be met by existing assets.
Even in mature organizations, project managers must be able to
assess their organization’s assets during project planning, and work
with their teams to address any gaps that will slow or prevent the
project’s success.
In this two-day course, you will learn to: identify and assess your
organization’s process assets against your project’s needs; tailor
existing assets for maximum effectiveness; and develop homegrown assets
to achieve project and organizational success. Topics include: defining
Organizational Process Assets, strategies and resources for tailoring
and/or augmenting assets, empowering team members through asset
ownership, product / system life cycle considerations, and the
relationship between process assets and organizational
maturity.
Participants will:
- Identify and analyze the origin and appropriateness of existing process assets
- Develop tailoring strategies for project-specific asset needs
- Create draft process assets to address identified gaps
- Plan for process assets across a product’s / system’s life cycle
- Plan for transfer of tailored process assets to the
organization for continuous improvement
Upon course completion, participants will have the tools they
need to increase their personal and project success. You will be able
to tailor organizational process assets to suit
your project’s unique needs, while inspiring team
members to embrace and own continuous process
improvement.
The course will also provide insight into the role that project,
program and portfolio assets play in organizational maturity. You will
also uncover the importance of harnessing individual, group and
organizational experience to continually strengthen the organization’s
cache of process artifacts.

About the Instructors
Elizabeth A.
McQueen, PMP and Michael Van
Dyke, PMP
Elizabeth A. McQueen, PMP, is the President of Process Evolution Group, Inc. (PEG), a process development, re-engineering and consulting company.
Beginning in the mid ‘90s as a technical documentation librarian at the U.S. headquarters of Ericsson in Dallas, TX, her career has focused on helping both large and small companies to improve their organizational maturity to achieve successful certifications and assessments against international quality standards such as the CMM and CMMI, and various ISO standards.
In the course of Elizabeth’s career as a process improvement project manager, she has been responsible for the development of corporate process assets for all aspects of software, system, and service management projects and programs, including requirements development, deployment, risk management, release management, configuration / change management, internal quality assurance, and metrics reporting, trending, and analysis.
Elizabeth is active in the Washington, D.C. chapter of the Project Management Institute (PMIWDC), and has served on the Board of Directors since 2009. As the Vice President of Records Management for the chapter for 2010-2011, she is leading an ongoing effort for the chapter to document its repeatable business processes.
In addition to teaching in the Project Management Certificate Program for the Continuing Education and Workforce Development branch of Northern Virginia Community College (NVCC), Elizabeth is an instructor for the Level I Program Manager certification courses for the Department of Homeland Security through Defense Acquisition University (DAU).
Elizabeth graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a degree in Advertising, specializing in market research. She has completed graduate course work in variant statistics, in addition to SEI authorized CMMI for Development, ISO 9001 auditor training, and courses from IBM Rational University.
Michael R. Van Dyke is president of Serengeti Enterprises, Inc., a company providing training, team-building, and coaching services to business teams and individuals. He is a certified coach (NCC) through the Newfield Network and a member of the International Coach Federation (ICF). In addition to customized training, Mr. Van Dyke offers open enrollment seminars through the Northern Virginia Community College (NVCC) in a variety of communication-based business courses, such as “Project Management Communications,” “Confident Public Speaking,” “Team Dynamics,” “Excelling as a First Time Manager,” and “Conflict Resolution.” Past and present clients include Capital One, the Marriott (Corporation) Ranch, Lauten Construction Company, Boston Properties, the Virginia Regional Transportation Association, Wells Fargo Home Mortgage, SAIC, the MITRE Corporation, and Analytic Services, Inc. (ANSER).
Mr. Van Dyke brings a unique style and innovative approach to the classroom. Based on training with Project Adventure, an international outdoor experiential educational organization, he has incorporated individual and group exercises in all his courses, resulting in a true “hands-on” learning experience for students. For four years, he was the Program Administrator for Corporate Challenge, an outdoor team building company that worked with Northeast Utilities. Mr. Van Dyke makes even the lecture portions of his classes entertaining. He updates his professional speaking skills through membership in the National Speakers Association (NSA) and the American Society for Training and Development (ASTD). Mr. Van Dyke regularly speaks on human dynamics for effective project management and on innovative business leadership.
Mr. Van Dyke earned his MFA in Technical Design and Production at the Yale School of Drama and a BA in Communications Studies Education at the University of Massachusetts. Prior to establishing his own business, Mr. Van Dyke worked in higher education for 20 years, wearing two hats: professor and project manager. His previous employers include Yale University, Amherst College, Dartmouth College, Smith College, and the University of Massachusetts. As a theatrical Production Manager, Mr. Van Dyke honed his skills as a team development specialist, managing 12-28 overlapping project teams per year. With teams composed of union workers, technical professionals, students, and volunteers, managing team dynamics became a constant practice. By capturing the “lessons learned” and applying them to new situations, Mr. Van Dyke can provide an array of proven strategies from which his clients may choose. He is preparing a book on the advantages of using trust as the main motivation for managing successful teams.
