About the Program:

Management of New Nuclear Power Plant Projects
Designing AREVA’s Evolutionary Power Reactor (EPR)

The EPR reactor is an advanced Generation III+ nuclear reactor offered by AREVA to satisfy electricity companies'needs for a new generation of nuclear power plants worldwide. AREVA NP Inc. (AREVA) and Bechtel Power Corporation (Bechtel) are working as a consortium to complete the detailed design engineering (DDE) for AREVA’s U.S. Evolutionary Power Reactor (U.S. EPRTM) for UniStar Nuclear Energy. The first plant will be located adjacent to Constellation Energy’s Calvery Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant in Lusby, Md.

The DDE project schedule consists of over 20,000 activities and spans approximately five years. The Project Controls organization plays an important role in the successful execution of this challenging and very important project. A schedule management plan has been developed for use by both AREVA and Bechtel to provide guidance and direction to the Detailed Engineering Project Team on the development, maintenance and utilization of project scheduling tools which are employed in managing schedule progress and achieving the overall success of the project.

The successful completion of a project of this magnitude requires each organization to commit to strictly follow the principles of project management. In particular, scope control, schedule management, quality and precise communications and clearly defined roles and responsibilities throughout the project lifecycle are critical elements necessary to successfully complete the project.

The presentation summarizes the project management tools and techniques used to manage the DDE project and enable the management team to monitor the overall progress of the project and to identify areas requiring specific actions to minimize risks or to take advantage of potential opportunities for project success.
