This presentation will cover the results and findings found in the article of the same title in Noblis Inc.’s SIGMA Project Management Office (PMO) Edition — Fall 2008. The speaker will present two approaches to improved schedule management for complex projects; Earned Schedule and the Event Chain methodology. Earned Schedule is a variant of the widely-used Earned Value method and is rapidly gaining acceptance in the project management community. The Event Chain methodology is an evolving simulation-based approach for handling project risks that can improve project schedule planning and management. The speaker will provide some additional insights motivating the two approaches discussed, and also make some comments on how the article relates to some of the other articles published in that special edition of SIGMA.

Dr. W. Scott Nainis is a Senior Principal at Noblis, Inc. in Falls Church, Virginia, and was previously employed by the MITRE Corporation and Arthur D. Little, Inc. Dr. Nainis has worked in systems design and development for federal, state and commercial clients in the areas of financial systems, benefits and entitlements, logistics management, and process support and manufacturing systems. He has also worked in telecommunications planning, design and acquisition and has performed analysis, planning and forecasting work in both the energy and environmental arenas. Over the last forty years Dr. Nainis has led numerous planning and implementation projects. He has taught on the adjunct faculty of Case Western Reserve University, the University of Massachusetts, Georgetown University and the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (VPI).

Dr. Nainis is formally trained in systems engineering and electrical engineering, and has a secondary education in operations research. He is a member of the Project Management Institute (PMI) and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). He holds S.B and S.M degrees from MIT and a PhD from Case Western Reserve University.
