About the Program
The Value of PMI and Project Management
Valerie Carter, Manager, Government Relations for the Project Management Institute will be talking about the state of project management in the federal government and future trends for the profession both globally as well as within the US federal government. In addition, she will give an updated status on PMI, including information on PMI’s certifications.
About the Speaker
Valerie Carter
Valerie Carter is the Manager, Government Relations for the Project Management Institute. Ms. Carter heads up PMI’s Washington, DC Representative Office and is responsible for government relations worldwide.
Ms. Carter works with governments in the U.S. and internationally to further the maturity of project management by providing benchmarking, networking opportunities, information, education and changing policy related to project management in the government. She is responsible for establishing strategy for PMI’s outreach and advocacy to governments around the world.
Before joining PMI in March 2005, Valerie worked 14 years for Merck & Co., Inc in various roles, including Merck’s federal Government Relations office as Manager, Government Relations Programs and Communications and Merck’s Public Affairs Department supporting the Manufacturing Division where she held positions in Safety and Environmental Communications, Facility Support, Community Relations and State Government Relations. Valerie began her career at Merck in 1992 as a cost analyst in the Central Engineering department, where she tracked spending on all domestic engineering projects for the Company.
A native of Georgia, Ms. Carter has a bachelor of arts degree in Communications and a minor in Marketing from Augusta State University in Augusta, Georgia.

Directions from I-95 & Rte 50: From Rt 50, take Exit 5 (Rte 410 W), bear RIGHT onto East-West Hwy, at first light turn slight RIGHT onto Ellin Rd, make LEFT onto Harkins Rd, make first RIGHT into CSC parking lot. Stop at the guard station to provide ID & location in building. Metro access is the Orange Line at New Carrollton; walk to tall CSC building.
