About the Program

Russ Fuhrman was the executive project manager of the ambitious 7.5-mile Woodrow Wilson Bridge replacement. He and his team managed the $2.5 billion program that includes all aspects in the bridge’s construction from planning, design and construction management to public and community affairs. Fuhrman recently was awarded the Golden Beaver Award for Engineering for his leadership on this and other projects.

About the Speaker

In his distinguished military career, Russ Fuhrman rose to the rank of major general in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.  He now faces similar challenges as the executive project manager of Potomac Crossing Consultants, an engineering consultancy supporting the Federal Highway Administration, Maryland State Highway Administration and Virginia Department of Transportation in the construction of the Woodrow Wilson Bridge.

Fuhrman was overseeing the management services provided by Potomac Crossing Consultants, a joint venture of Parsons Brinckerhoff, where Fuhrman served as senior vice president, and two other engineering consultancies.  He and his team are involved with planning, design management, project controls, construction management, environmental management, public affairs, community affairs, and congestion management for the $2.5 billion program that includes rebuilding four interchanges and a signature 12-lane bridge on 7.5 miles of the Capital Beltway around Washington, D.C.

During his 32 years with the Corps of Engineers, Fuhrman managed as director of civil works the nation’s $5 billion annual water resource infrastructure program and as the senior engineer for the United States Army in Europe was in charge of all aspects of more than 600 installations.  He retired in October 2000 from the Corps of Engineers as deputy commanding general and acting chief of engineers.  He joined Parsons Brinckerhoff in 2001.

Fuhrman is a graduate of the United States Military Academy and received his master’s degree from the Pennsylvania State University.  He is a registered professional engineer in Virginia and a member of the National Academy of Construction.
